windows services Messenger

Messenger; Messenger
Used, along with the Alerter service, by the Net Send command-line utility to send administrative alerts. If you have stopped Alerter and set it to Manual, you can do the same with Messenger. This service is not related to the Windows Messenger (also known as MSN Messenger) application.

MS Software Shadow Copy Provider; SwPrv
Enables the Windows Backup volume shadow copy feature in Windows XP, which allows open files to be backed up. Keep this service set to Manual.

Net Logon; Netlogon
Used only for logon in domain-based networks. For workgroup configurations, you can keep this service set to Manual.

NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing; mnmsrvc
Supports the desktop sharing feature of Microsoft NetMeeting. If you don't use NetMeeting, or if you want to ensure that this feature is not used on your system, set the service to Disabled.

Network Connections; Netman
Manages network connectivity. Leave this service set to Manual; it starts automatically when it's needed.

Network DDE; NetDDE

Network DDE DSDM; NetDDEdsdm
Used to support Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) over the network. The ClipBook service is one of very few programs that use Network DDE. You can keep both of these services set to Manual, but you might want to set them to Disabled to ensure that they are not started remotely.

Network Location Awareness (NLA); Nla
Supports the ability to use two or more different network configurations; needed primarily for notebook computers (for example, using a home and office network). If the service is set to Manual, it is started automatically when needed. This service also starts if ICF or ICS is in use.

NT LM Security Support Provider; NtLmSsp
Provides authentication for some remote procedure call (RPC) connections. Very few applications use this service. Microsoft Exchange Server does use it, but you are unlikely to encounter that in a workgroup network. Keep this service set to Manual.

Performance Logs and Alerts; SysmonLog
Provides options to run a program and send a message when specific conditions occur. If you are not using performance alerts (you specify alerts using the Performance console, which you can open with Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Performance or by entering perfmon.msc at a command prompt), set this service to Manual. (Note that the "Send a network message" action in a performance alert requires the Alerter service to be running.)

Plug and Play; PlugPlay
Detects and configures Plug and Play hardware devices. Keep this service set to Automatic, and never disable it.

Portable Media Serial Number; WmdmPmSp
Retrieves the serial number from portable music players connected to your computer. The serial number is required for transferring protected content to the player. If you don't have a portable music player, you can set this service to Manual or Disabled.

Print Spooler; Spooler
Helps to organize and send print jobs. Running this service is mandatory if you print to either a local or a remote printer. If this service isn't running, applications do not see any printers installed. You should leave this service set to Automatic in most cases.

Protected Storage; ProtectedStorage
Stores passwords, private keys, and form data in an encrypted state for security. Microsoft Internet Explorer and Microsoft Outlook Express are two clients of this service. Keep the service set to Automatic.
